From Cathedral to Countryside: The Best Backdrops for Wedding Photos in Exeter
As a wedding photographer who often works in Exeter, I’ve seen couples say their vows in all kinds of stunning settings. From grand cathedral steps to windswept hilltops, Exeter is packed with a variety of beautiful backdrops for wedding photos.
Whether you're planning a city ceremony or a countryside escape, I can provide advice on the best places for photographs in this part of the UK. If you’re looking for locations that go beyond the obvious, this guide is for you.
I’m
Harley Jaffar: wedding photographer, Super 8 film-maker, and visual storyteller. I shoot on digital and 35mm analogue film, capturing the story of your big day in the most timeless way.
Below are some of the spots in and around Exeter that I return to again and again for timeless, atmospheric photography.
1. Exeter Cathedral
You can’t talk about Exeter without mentioning its heart: the Cathedral. The gothic architecture is enchanting, especially in the soft morning light or during golden-hours. The West Front, with its striking sculptures, makes a beautiful backdrop for formal portraits, while the cloisters and quiet corners allow for more intimate shots.
Inside, if you have permission, the filtered light and vaulted ceilings create a sense of grandeur you won’t find elsewhere.
2. Southernhay Gardens
Just a short walk from the Cathedral, this peaceful green space provides a wonderful backdrop for relaxed portraits. You get that mix of urban and natural surroundings which suits couples who want something elegant but low-key. Great for candid, documentary-style shots too (my favourite kind!).
3. Topsham Quay & River Exe
Are you and your partner after something with that coastal vibe? Topsham is a top pick. It’s only a short drive from Exeter, and the light here is often magical, especially around sunset. You’ve got cobbled streets, old boats, the river and wide open skies. It’s a dream setting for both digital and film photography.
4. Haldon Forest Park
If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, Haldon Forest delivers. Dappled sunlight through the pine trees, big skies arching over fields, winding forest trails: it’s all there. It’s ideal for those atmospheric shots that feel quiet and cinematic.
5. Killerton House & Gardens (National Trust)
A little outside Exeter, but well worth the drive, Killerton offers stately-home charm with manicured gardens, woodland paths, and romantic nooks. It works beautifully for couples who want a classic, timeless feel, especially on 35mm film.
6. The Quayside & Canal Basin
If you want to be in the city, Exeter’s historic quayside has so much character: red brick warehouses, iron railings, reflections on the water. It’s perfect for couples who want their wedding photos to show a bit of grit, which can contrast wonderfully with glamorous dresses and tuxes. I’ve shot some of my favourite black-and-white frames here.
7. The Devon Countryside
Exeter is surrounded by some of the finest countryside in the South West. It’s known for its wide open fields, stone walls, old barns, and moody skies, all of which lend themselves well to wedding pictures.
Whether it’s a farm wedding or a tipi in a field, such rural scenes can be incredibly powerful in photos.
And with analogue film, the tones just sing. There's something about real countryside light on 35mm that digital can’t quite touch.
My Approach
I’m a documentary wedding photographer at heart. I don’t stage or force moments. I’m there to observe, quietly, respectfully, and capture what’s actually happening. I use digital cameras when I need to capture sharp shots quickly, but I also bring along my trusty 35mm film cameras for that beautiful, timeless texture. And if you’re after something really unique, I shoot
Super 8 wedding films too.
Wedding photos shouldn't feel like a photo shoot. They should capture the genuine moments of love, the unique story, of your wedding.
What Makes a Great Backdrop?
It doesn’t necessarily have to be grand- in fact, a great backdrop is often one that gives you space to be yourselves. Whether it’s the green outside the Cathedral or a windswept hill, my job is to make it sing.
I'm there to turn those moments into art. To give you more than just a photo for Instagram. I give you something you’ll want to print, frame and keep forever.
If you’re getting married in Exeter, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to locations for your pictures. Whatever atmosphere you’re going for, there’s a backdrop here for every kind of love story.
If you want someone who knows these places like the back of his hand, and who can shoot them beautifully on both digital and film, I’d love to hear about your plans.
